Shared Interest is a nonprofit investment fund based in New York, NY, with a mission to advance racial, gender, and economic justice in Southern Africa. Since its founding in 1994, the organization has been mobilizing resources and unlocking local capital to empower black-owned small and medium-sized businesses, improve livelihoods, create jobs, and build sustainable communities in Southern Africa. Through their innovative operating model, strategic partnerships, and social impact investments, Shared Interest aims to support an inclusive Covid-19 economic recovery, promote women's entrepreneurship, address climate change, enhance agriculture, and foster fintech and social enterprises in the region.
As Shared Interest celebrates its 30th anniversary, they are launching the Voices of Change campaign, highlighting influential voices in financial inclusion, philanthropy, social impact, and advocacy that have contributed to the economic empowerment of black women entrepreneurs and other SMEs in Southern Africa. With a vision to be a catalyst for financial inclusion, systems change, economic empowerment, and social impact, Shared Interest aims to expand its geographic footprint, partner effectively with local program experts and lending institutions, and reach 100,000 people in economically disenfranchised communities by 2024. Through their 30th Anniversary Campaign, they are seeking $3 million to support black women-owned businesses, SMEs in key development sectors, and unlock capital to scale the impact of the SME sector.
