The district is one of the five independent waste collection agencies within the Town of Hempstead. It is responsible for about 50,000 properties in the Five Towns area as well as parts of Lynbrook. Sanitary District 1 employs over 100 people and collects nearly 40,000 tons of solid waste a year. Garbage is picked up every week, and recyclables are collected every other Wednesday. The district has a board of five commissioners, who are elected to office. Phil Mistero serves as its superintendent.
