The Rochester Fire Department works to prevent, control and limit damages by fire through an aggressive strategy of education and emergency response that focuses on the preservation of life, property and the environment. It performs various duties in emergency situations, such as vehicle extrications, medical emergencies, high-level rescue, hazardous materials incidents, structural collapse and swift water rescue. The organization has a community emergency response team that provides training on basic disaster survival and rescue skills for citizens. The Rochester Fire Department s community relations and education unit conducts fire safety presentations for the people of Rochester, N.Y. The organization has more than 500 uniformed and nonuniformed members.
