The Opening Word Program is a literacy, ESOL, and job readiness program located in Huntington, Town of, NY. With a mission to unlock the language ability of adult participants, the program aims to empower individuals for personal growth, increased civic responsibility, and enhanced workforce skills. Through strengthening English language skills, focusing on family development and health literacy, and providing job-readiness and post-secondary educational experiences, the Opening Word Program prepares eligible students for U.S. citizenship.
Founded by Sister Mary Ryan, OP and Sister Margaret Briody, OP, the Opening Word Program is a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville. Celebrating its 30th year, the program has grown from teaching in a church basement to serving 300 women annually at three sites. With students from over 45 countries and a non-denominational approach, the Opening Word Program has become a vital resource for adult learners seeking language skills and empowerment.
