"We're the only young brothers expressing the health movement out here," says Enrique Almonte, owner of Main Essentials Cafe located on Nyack's Main Street by the corner of Franklin.
The cafe is completely vegan and is known for its Caribbean hot plates of greens, yuka, barbecue "spare ribs," stewed "chicken," plantains, rice, beans and more. It features a juice bar with a variety of fresh vegetables and fruits squeezed upon order. It offers wheat grass shots, ginseng drinks and a soothing Caribbean atmosphere with friendly service.
Almonte originally opened Main Essentials Cafe in Haverstraw, NY, in 2002, but after years of loyal customers trying to convince him to move to Nyack, he relocated in early 2009. All food is free of MSG, artificial flavors and chemicals. It does not use animal products and all dishes are vegetarian and vegan. The cafe is also stocked with vegan frozen dishes for sale and a flat-screen TV.
