Since 1891, the Board of Regents and the New York State Education Department have overseen the preparation, licensure and practice of the professions. Currently, the Office of the Professions regulates more than 40 professions defined in Title VIII of the Education Law. The department administers professional regulation through its Office of the Professions, assisted by the State Boards for the Professions. Licensing, registration and related fees are the sole means of support for professional regulation in New York State. These fees support comprehensive services to the public and the professions. The Office of the Professions provides a number of services to the public and the professions, including the following: review of more than 3,000 licensure programs, design and administer licensing examinations, process applications and registers entities as professions.
