The New York State Teachers' Retirement System, established in 1921, provides retirement, disability and death benefits to eligible New York State public school teachers and administrators. It administers funds for providing retirement and ancillary benefits to public school teachers and administrators employed outside New York City. It has more than 264,000 active members and over 130,000 retirees and beneficiaries. It generates funds from various sources, such as employer and member contributions and investment income. It invests the employer and member contributions throughout a member s career and accumulates the assets necessary to provide a fully funded benefit in retirement. The New York State Teachers' Retirement System maintains an office in Albany, N.Y.
