The Long Island Pine Barrens Society is a not-for-profit environmental education and advocacy organization. It works to preserve open space and water reservoirs in the Pine Barrens and other parts of Long Island. The LIPBS played a crucial role in legalisation passing The Long Island Pine Barrens Protection Act of 1993 and succeeded in creating a Pine Barrens Core of 53,000 acres which can never be developed, and a 47,000 acre Compatible Growth Area in which regulated development is permitted. It has a Board of Directors that meet monthly and members who regularly receive newsletters, The Pine Barrens Today and information on how to preserve open space and drinking water in their own communities. Donations are taken by mail or on-line. The LIPBS is thought to be the most respected environmental organization in the state of New York.
