In 1995 some local residents came together to help convince the town of Port Jefferson to save the dilapidated area of East Broadway that had historically served as a ship building site. The vision of the residents was to preserve a piece of the harbor front and transform it into a public place for all residents to enjoy. The association that came to be known as the Long Island Seaport and Eco Center (LISEC) has continued to fight for the integrity of the shoreline and waters of Port Jefferson. LISEC supported the creation of the Bayles Boat Shop where volunteers come to do wood boat building projects, adopt-a-beach and shellfish restoration programs and education projects using the Long Island Sound and Port Jefferson Harbor as a laboratory for learning. The headquarters for LISEC is in the Bayles Boat Shop located in Harborfront Park.
