The memorial band shell is named after former Sands Point resident John Philip Sousa, the late composer popularly proclaimed "The March King." Funded entirely through community donations, local citizen Gay Pearsall conceived of the idea, spearheaded the project and spent several years fundraising for its construction. Its final dedication took place in 1977. Located directly on Manhasset Bay and next to the Town Dock, the band shell offers free student, community based and professional concerts in the summer, weather permitting. It's first-come, first-serve for the best view but is strictly a "bring your own lawn chair" type of event. The concerts are sponsored by Port Washington's Community Chest.
