History
Master Joel A. Otero Burgos first started the academy in 2002, after 16 years of training in traditional Korean Tae Kwon Do and 10 years of assisting and teaching classes. He holds Black Belt ranks in 3 different martial arts disciplines, and has trained in American boxing and Muay Thai under the most prestigious coaches in the sport. In 2003 the JAO Maryial Arts academy found its home in sheepshead bay Brooklyn. The academy continued growing as Master JAO found time to compete nationally and internationally in sport karate until his retirement from competition in 2007. After his retirement Master JAO began formal Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training, and in 2012 he affiliated with 13x BJJ world champion Caio Terra. Professor Terra has worked extensively with JAO and the students at the academy, allowing all students to grow and learn world class technical Jiu jitsu. Earning his Brown Belt early in 2017, Master JAO teaches and trains everyday alongside his dedicated students.
