History
Immigrant Claus Holtermann started baking in what is now known as the Treasury House in Historic Richmondtown. He and his wife Catherine basically sold bread to neighbors, delivering on foot and then by horse and wagon. They moved the business a few blocks away to enlarge the bakery. Now they were delivering to many neighborhoods on Staten Island by horse and wagon. Their children continued the baking tradition with their mother when Claus died. The bakery was sold to Hathaways Bakery but youngest son Albert started producing in a new building he helped build at 405 Arthur Kill Rd. in 1930. The baking had expanded to cakes, cookies, pies and eventually delivered by 26 orange trucks to every location on Staten Island. Albert's two sons join the tradition and expanded into wholesale, house to house became unprofitable. Small local stores were served in S.I., Brooklyn, NJ,and PA . Al Jr and Cliff created new products to keep their store competitive. Bill & Jeff, their sons, carry on.
