The Weatherhead East Asian Institute, formerly known as the East Asian Institute, is a center for research, teaching and publishing on modern and contemporary Asia, including China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Korean peninsula. Established in 1949, it provides a variety of undergraduate, master's and doctoral degree programs of study. The institute s curriculum includes political science, anthropology, architecture, economics, international affair, law, history, business, and writing and media technologies. The Weatherhead East Asian Institute also conducts language and literature courses in Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese. It also creates an international forum for discussion about cultural, economic, historical and political issues involving the Asia Pacific region through its several programs, conferences, seminars and publications. The institute is a part of the Columbia University, which also operates various other institutes. The Weatherhead East Asian Institute is located in New York City.
