The Bowery Residents' Committee (BRC) was founded in 1971 by residents of a homeless shelter in the Bowery area of Manhattan. Today, BRC has grown to add 27 total programs, all of which are aimed at improving the lives of New York City residents battling with homelessness, poverty, mental illness and drug addiction.
BRC has a strong volunteer base and prides itself on being an organization that is compassionate of its clients, accepting them at face value. BRC offers drug treatment, mental health care, medical services, transitional housing, senior services and vocational services.
It also expects clients to advocate for their own needs.
