Established in 1879, the California State Board of Equalization administers various programs in the areas of property and sales and use taxes, as well as the tax appellate program. It collects the state of California s fuel, alcohol and tobacco taxes and fees that provide revenue for the state government and essential funding for counties, cities and special districts. The board s revenues support a range of programs and services, including hospitals and health care services, criminal justice, social welfare, law enforcement, consumer services, natural resource management, transportation and housing. The California State Board of Equalization offers the Electronic Funds Transfer Program, which includes payment of tax and fee electronically through telephone and the Internet. It also provides the Credit Card Payment Program, which features making of sales and use tax payment through credit cards.
