The Bedford-Stuyvesant Volunteer Ambulance Corps (BSVAC) was the first minority-run volunteer ambulance corps to be run in the United States. Since BSVAC was introduced more than 20 years ago, ambulance response times for the neighborhood plummeted from 30 minutes to about four minutes. BSVAC also looks to train as many people as possible in the neighborhood to become first responders, including both youth and adults. If you are without health insurance but suffer from health issues, BSVAC acts as a viable alternative as it also has a first aid center that is, of course, run be volunteers.
