History
Barber's Farm has been family run for 6 generations. Originally a subsistence farm, Grace Barber, began selling excess produce in 1948 from a picnic table on the lawn. Two years later, her father-in-law, Emmett, built a shed to be used for produce storage, which would eventually become the farmstand on Route 30, Middleburgh, from which we still sell the majority of our produce. Roger Barber (1925-2002) significantly expanded the acreage and production of Barber's Farm, and served as the Commissioner of Agriculture for NYS from 1975 to 1984. Roger's son, James, and his wife Cynthia became co-owners in 1980, and today Cynthia and her nephew Jacob are partners in the business. James disassociated from the farm in order to serve as Special Assistant to the Commissioner of Agriculture in 2007. In 2009 he was appointed to the position of Director of the NYFSA by President Obama. Today, James, Cynthia and Jacob work jointly to ensure the future of the farm and provide high quality produce.
Specialties
For more information, please visit our facebook page. Barber's Farm is known for our high quality fruits, vegetables and flowers. We hand harvest all of our produce from 150 acres of land in the heart of the Schoharie Valley and sell it at our retail farmstand on Route 30, Middleburgh, as well as at farmers' markets and the small satellite stands we set up throughout the capital region during the summer months. In the spring we utilize seven greenhouses to produce an impressive array of garden flowers, vegetable plants and hanging baskets for sale by late April. In the winter months we use high tunnel greenhouses - which rely solely on solar energy - to grow greens and cold-hardy vegetables to accompany our frozen vegetables and storage crops, available on the weekends. It is our mission to produce high quality, sustainable, healthy produce, so we are constantly trying new varieties and improving our techniques. Thank you for your interest in our business!
