NMSBVI - Residential Programs
New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is located in Alamogordo, N.M., and was founded in 1903. It is a specialized school which provides residential, academic, support and outreach services to the blind and visually impaired students of New Mexico. Its comprehensive curriculum develops social interaction, recreation and leisure, career, visual efficiency and independent living skills, and education and technology. It also emphasizes on the development of compensatory and functional skills that include concept development, spatial understanding, study and organizational skills, speaking and listening classes. The children use Braille, large print, print with the use of optical devices, regular print, tactile symbols, a calendar system, sign language and recorded materials to communicate. Its instructional resource center and the New Mexico repository provide educational materials for students with visual impairment.
