The American Indian Law Center, Inc. (AILC) is a nationally recognized organization based in Albuquerque, NM, dedicated to strengthening, promoting, and honoring tribal governments and organizations. Established in 1967, AILC is the oldest Indian-managed and Indian-controlled legal and public policy organization in the United States, providing training, technical assistance, and legal and policy analysis on various issues important to tribal governments. As a 100% Indian-controlled organization, AILC possesses extensive knowledge about tribal institutions, including tribal courts, and their role in tribal government, as well as tribal, state, and federal relations.
AILC's mission is to facilitate important services, communications, negotiations, and relations among tribal, state, and federal governments. They offer programs such as the Pre-Law Summer Institute, which prepares American Indian and Alaska Native individuals for the challenges of law school, and the Southwest Intertribal Court of Appeals, which provides training, technical assistance, and support services for the review of tribal court decisions. AILC is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation housed at the University of New Mexico School of Law, operating independently but with a close partnership with the university.
