Founded in 1897, the Woodbridge Fire Department has gone through a building or two - the last built in 1969 - but the fire company has pretty much spent its existence on School St., right across from the Board of Education building. A combination of professional and volunteer firefighters, the WFD responds to approximately 800 calls a year throughout the township. Five full time fire inspectors are employed.
A statue of a fireman holding a firehose is near by firehouse. The fireman, a memorial, is set on a pedestal on a bit of land at the intersection of School St. and East Park Ave. The statue is well known throughout the township. It was erected in the memory of the "departed firemen" of Woodbridge and Sewaren.
