The Lake Hiawatha Fire Department -- Fire District No. 4 -- has been serving the community since 1935. It operates with two engines, a ladder, a fire command vehicle and a support vehicle. The department is staffed by an all-volunteer crew of six officers, 25 firefighters and a chaplain.
Through the years, it has assisted residents in fires, floods, traffic accidents and other emergencies. In 1980, it also did protection duty for Vice President George Bush during his visit to Parsippany. The department sponsors numerous community events throughout the year, including Fire Prevention Week, when it opens its doors to residents and schoolchildren for firehouse tours and educational seminars.
