History
The Institute for Therapeutic Massage was established in 1994 by Lisa Helbig, LMT, and in April of 2001, the school became accredited by the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA) - the only specialized accreditor recognized by the United States Department of Education (DOE) with a primary focus on massage education, and helping students become massage therapists. Our Tinton Falls, Monmouth County location, was added in 1999, and our first hospital-based training program was started in 2000 at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ-Newark, Essex County). We have since opened 2 more hospital-based programs, with our Morristown Memorial Hospital location opening in 2002, Morris County, and Community Medical Center, in Toms River, Ocean County in 2006. In 2013 we moved our Newark classes to Bloomfield, NJ.
Specialties
Our goal is to ensure that Institute for Therapeutic Massage (ITM) graduates exceed the expectations of the massage, bodywork, health and wellness community as competent, qualified, and ethical professionals, all while learning to become a massage therapist, personal trainer, and shiatsu practitioner in New Jersey. Our philosophy of education is to utilize a combination of academic study and hands-on techniques to incorporate late breaking research, and thus offer the students who study and learn at our massage school, with 6 locations in New Jersey, 5 hospital affiliations, and a low student to teacher classroom ratio, the highest level of knowledge and skill to work safely and effectively. We recognize that every prospective student has different needs and all of our massage, personal training, and shiatsu program information sessions are held one on one with an admissions advisor to provide you the individualized attention required.
