In 1911, Jewish immigrants from Russia and Poland pooled enough small change to erect a $1,000 wooden structure at First and Center streets. Currently, the 175 families of Congregation Agudath Achim enjoy a building on 59 Broad Street that includes a 350-person ballroom, kosher catering kitchens, social halls and classrooms. In a sanctuary with striking stained glass windows, men and women sit together for services somewhere between Orthodox and Reformed Judaism. The Jewish Center operates Hebrew School and various activities for adults, including lectures, films, discussions and education on outreach.
