The Borough of North Caldwell was incorporated in 1898. Comprised mostly of single-family homes, the borough has a population of 7,375, according to the 2000 census.
North Caldwell has a mayor-council government system, headed by Mayor Mel Levine whose term runs through 2010. Council members include: Joseph Alessi, council president, finance (2010); James Campbell, public safety (2010); John Chiaia, public works (2011); Cynthia Santomauro, legal and ordinance(2011); Patricia McGrogan-Fost, personnel-administration (2012); and Frank Astorino, recreation (2012). The council meets at the municipal building on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 8pm.
