The Berkeley Heights police department is on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week to patrol the township and respond to reports of crime or emergencies. The department is headed by Chief of Police Michael P. Mathis.
Officers in the department participate in local parades and events with a color guard, and some of the 27-member staff are assigned to the Union County SWAT and Emergency Response Teams.
Patrol officers operate Crown Victoria patrol cars equipped with mobile data computers that allow them to search state and federal crime information detabases.
For all emergency calls or to report a crime, dial 911. For non-emergency calls, dial (908) 464-1111.
For information on how to obtain a pistol permit, firearms ID card or for fingerprinting, see the department's website, which also includes downloadable forms for several permit requests.
