The beginnings of discount retailing can be traced to 1962, the first year of operation for Wal-Mart in Rogers, Ark. Sam Walton's tiny chain of variety stores in Arkansas and Kansas were facing competition from regional discount chains, but he believed the American consumer was shifting to a different type of general store. Today, Walton's gamble is a global company with more than 1.9 million associates worldwide and nearly 6,500 stores and wholesale clubs across 13 countries; and the "most admired retailer" according to FORTUNE magazine. Wal-Mart features a grocery store, garden center, portrait studio and vision center. It provides a selection of pharmacy, entertainment and household products. Its household products include bedding, flowers and plants, lamps, and bedroom, office and kitchen furniture. It provides a range of jewelry, such as bracelets, rings, watches, earrings, pendants and necklaces for all occasions, including weddings and engagements. In addition, it offers personal care products, pet supplies, sports-related items, toys and electronic items. It specializes in camping, hunting, fishing, boating, and exercise and fitness equipment, such as skates, bikes, scooters, treadmills, weight benches, elliptical, coolers and tents.
