I like to laugh with my patients. Being present and compassionate makes those moments possible. When a patient brings concerns to a visit, it’s my job to listen, validate their struggle and make safe and effective suggestions for their plan of care. We are a team. A plan only works if it aligns with a patient’s life and goals. Part of that is helping them embrace lifestyle changes in conjunction with other necessary treatments. Eating and sleeping well, managing stress and exercising are all ways to improve our health. Another key component is evidence-based care. I make it a priority to stay up to date on the latest research and best practices. While working in a Neurosciences Critical Care Unit (NCCU), I realized just how gratifying helping people with neurological issues is. I want to enable them to feel better. I also want to be challenged—and neurology is challenging. Learning about my patients and finding moments of shared joy is a welcome reward.
