Founded in 1935, the Omaha Housing Authority contracts with the Department of Housing and Urban Development to provide several types of housing solutions for low- and moderate-income individuals through rent subsidies. The agency administers more than 2,700 public housing units and over 3,700 Section 8 units. Its family services department offers homeownership, self-sufficiency and employment programs. The Omaha Housing Authority provides cultural enrichment, preventative medical treatment and recreational services for senior citizens at Evans Tower. In addition, the agency offers the English as a Second Language and computer training programs. It provides the Youth Prevention Intervention Program for the children of the Southside Terrace area in Nebraska. The Omaha Housing Authority administers Alamo, Cherry Tree and Spencer apartments. The agency is governed by Douglas County in Nebraska.
