Established in 1955, Gates Elementary School was named for Dr. C. Ray Gates, who was the superintendent of schools. It maintains various school organizations, including a character council, Quiz Bowl and parent-teacher association, which sponsors educational and social programs that compliment the classroom curriculum. Gates Elementary School teaches more than 335 students in prekindergarten through grade six. Located in Grand Island, Neb., the school is a part of Grand Island Public Schools, which operates over 20 schools with a combined enrollment of nearly 8,200 students. Gates Elementary School has a staff of approximately 35 full-time certified teachers and paraprofessionals that includes an integration specialist, media assistant, psychologist, nurse, educational consultant, social worker, nutritionist, speech pathologist, classroom teachers, art and music professionals, health and physical education instructors, and physical and occupational therapists.
