Established in 1919, the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology conducts research and assists in the development of mineral and water resources. It is a nonregulatory agency that provides extensive advisory, technical and informational services on geologic, mineral, energy and water resources. The Bureau is also involved in the study of environmental impacts to land and water caused by past practices in hard-rock mining. The Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology is comprised of more than 55 full-time research professionals and technical and clerical members. It maintains a laboratory that conducts analytical method development and sample analysis in support of research. The bureau also operates earthquake studies, environmental assessment and geology and minerals offices. The Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology is located in Butte, Mont.
