In 1976 Onno Wieringa, Bill Hoffman and Darwon Stoneman began Glacier Raft Company with two rafts, a van and a desire to share with others the beautiful Flathead River. Over the next ten years, they pioneered the Lower Flathead River in Polson, Montana; the Lochsa River in Idaho; and bought into an operation in Cataract canyon on the Colorado in Utah and the Kicking Horse River in Canada. By 1985 they were spread pretty thin (or wide). Bill Hoffman traded his rafting attire for a flying career and Sally Thompson came aboard as a partner to take over the office and reservations. As they all began to have families, they felt the need to focus on the original rivers they fell in love with,
