The Central Montana Regional Water Authority (CMRWA) is a collaborative effort between Central Montana RC&D staff and local communities in Central Montana. Their main objective is to provide a municipal water source through the Musselshell-Judith Rural Water System, aiming to address the water scarcity issues faced by many communities in the region. The project aims to benefit residents and communities by reducing the costs of upgrading smaller water facilities, providing job opportunities, and attracting business and industry to the area. The regional water system will initially serve around 5,800 residents and has the potential to expand to approximately 7,500 residents as the communities grow.
CMRWA has received a water right for 300 gallons per minute and plans to convert a test well into a production well, along with drilling additional wells, to provide a total of approximately 1,200 gallons per minute. The project, which is seeking federal funds, is considered fiscally responsible as a regional approach, as it would be cost-prohibitive for individual communities to comply with federal mandates for water quality. Although the project is expected to take several years to complete, the long-term benefits of a reliable and high-quality water source make it a worthwhile endeavor for the communities along the CMRWA route.
