History
In 2006 a group of parents gathered to discuss their hopes & dreams for their children with developmental disabilities. Like most parents their biggest request was that their children's future include a safe environment for their individual needs & a fulfilling and valued lifestyle. Out of these dreams The Farmer's House, Inc., a not for profit 501(c)(3), was born. The idea of a working farm where children, youth & young adults could live, work, play & grow took shape & the process of learning as much as possible about existing farm or ranch communities for individuals with developmental disabilities was undertaken. In 2010 Farmer's House started The Seeds of Change Garden Program at The Weston Red Barn Farm, in Weston, Missouri. In 2011 plans to open The Farmer's House Market in the historic Vaughn's Apple Orchard retail space took shape. In April of 2012, The Farmer's House Market opened!
Specialties
The mission of The Farmer's House Market is to provide a community integrated hands on work environment that will provide youth and adults with developmental disabilities practical vocational skills. These skills will be learned by operating a cash register, making change, stocking shelves, interacting with customers, planning, tending and harvesting the market garden and so much more. But even more valuable than practical work skills, The Farmer's House Market is a place to cultivate self-esteem, grow a sense of self worth and harvest the confidence and passion that come from a job well done.
