Sutherland Lumber Company has a unique family-owned heritage that lives on today. As one of America's first building supply stores, Sutherlands pioneered many business practices common to the industry today. Founded in 1917 as a house-pattern yard, Sutherlands learned about rig timbers, cement by the trainloads and corrugated iron by the carload while realizing opportunities in the Oklahoma oil fields. As times and priorities progressed, Sutherland found itself carrying products of value to farmers. The company then began stocking materials like tools and hardware in areas where customers could pick and choose what they needed. In the 1960 s, Sutherland was a full hardware store. Today, Sutherland Company is a fully stocked lumber and hardware store that carried tools, hardware, paint, roofing, windows, doors and a complete line of building materials. Sutherland has stores throughout the United States. Its corporate headquarters is in Kansas City, Mo.
