The Social Security Administration is an independent agency of the United States federal government that administers a social insurance program consisting of retirement, disability and survivors' benefits. The agency operates more than 10 regional offices, over 1,300 field offices and nearly 35 service centers. The Social Security Administration provides monthly benefits to retired and disabled workers, the survivors of insured workers and their spouses and children. In addition, it offers the Supplemental Security Income program, which provides services to more than 7 million elderly, blind and disabled people. The Social Security Administration has been operational for more than 70 years and maintains a location in Springfield, Mo.
