Peabody Energy is one of the largest private-sector coal companies, with sales of nearly 250 million tons and billions of dollars in revenues. Its coal products fuel approximately 10 percent of all United States electricity and some of worldwide electricity. Peabody Energy serves worldwide coal demand from electricity generators and steel makers and has grown to serve new customers and emerging 'Btu Conversion' markets. At the age of 24, Francis S. Peabody founded the retail coal business in Chicago in 1883. Its first coal mine opened in 1895 in Williamson County, Ill. Peabody Energy has grown from a retail coal business to more than 30 operations in the United States nearly 20 operations throughout the rest of the world. Gregory H. Boyce has been the chief executive officer of Peabody Energy for more than a year. He has been with the chemical, petroleum and materials company for over three years. Boyce earned a BS degree from the University of Arizona. Corporate headquarters are maintained in St. Louis.
