Stemming from volunteer firefighters in the 1960s, this fire protection district provides many valuable services to residents, organizations and business owners in Eureka and select areas of Northern Franklin County. Eureka Fire Protection District serves more than 28,000 people living within 82 square miles. It has three fire stations, whose members are a combination of paid (career) employees and volunteers (reserves). It is geographically the largest fire department in St. Louis County. The Eureka Fire Protection team also can join special events to assist with public education, and sometimes birthday parties, by special request. The firemen also conduct CPR classes and are part of Eureka's dedication to the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program. In addition, the professionals participate in search-and-rescue missions as well as large animal rescue efforts. Youths ages 14 through 17 who are considering firefighting as a profession may join the Explorer Post 2498 program.
