Midwest Research Institute ensured that M&Ms melt in your mouth, not in your hand. Established in 1944, the independent, nonprofit institute develops practical solutions to issues related to health, agriculture, food safety, national defense, engineering, environment, information technology and energy. The company works as a contract firm and conducts scientific research, technology development and technical services designed to aid the government and industry, as well as the general public. Its projects have included work for the Department of Homeland Security, the Veterans Affairs Department, the University of Missouri and the United States Army, as well as research for Mars Incorporated that led to the development of M&Ms candy coating in the 1950s. Midwest Research Institute has headquarters in Kansas City, Mo., and additional offices in Colorado, Florida, Maryland and North Carolina.
