The L-A-D Foundation, established in 1962, is a Missouri private operating foundation dedicated to the responsible management of Pioneer Forest and the preservation of outstanding natural, geologic, cultural, and historic areas in the public interest. With a focus on the Missouri Ozark region, the foundation operates twelve designated Missouri Natural Areas, one state park, one state historic site, and nearly a thousand acres of river corridor lands along the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, all of which are open to the public for research and recreation.
Founded by Leo Drey, Pioneer Forest is a sustainable timber business that operates using a conservative method of single-tree selection harvest. The forest, which covers over 143,000 acres, serves as a demonstration forest for the L-A-D Foundation, showcasing successful methods of conservative forest management and contributing to the dialogue on sustainable use of forest resources at regional, national, and international levels. Located in southeast Missouri within the Current River watershed, both L-A-D Foundation properties and Pioneer Forest offer visitors the opportunity to explore and learn about the unique natural wonders of the Missouri Ozarks.
