The Mississippi Department of Corrections works to provide and promote public safety through offender custody, care and control. The department manages a corrections investigation division that handles various cases, such as extortion, narcotic violations, gang activities and security threats. It also operates an institutions division that is responsible for educational and vocational programs. The Mississippi Department of Corrections provides opportunities to participate in a selection of chaplaincy and religious programs. In addition, the department manages a medical division that offers health care services for offenders. Its community corrections division is responsible for serving residents in restitution centers and inmates in community work centers.
