Aldersgate Mission, a ministry of Main Street United Methodist Church since 1972, is dedicated to enhancing the academic, social, and spiritual development of over 60 youth in the downtown Hattiesburg area. Their programs aim to foster appropriate social skills, academic support, leadership potential, compassion, self-confidence, character building, and spiritual growth, while deterring children from potential gang affiliation and exploring their talents.
Through the Compass Reading Program, funded by United Way of Southeast Mississippi, Aldersgate Mission provides web-based learning modules in their computer lab, allowing children to test their literacy skills and receive targeted lessons to address their weaknesses. With the support of dedicated staff and volunteers, children like Ryna have excelled in their learning, achieving reading levels well beyond their grade level. Generous donations from the community help ensure the success of Ryna and 59 other children in Forrest County.
