Established in 1906, the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce regulates and promotes agricultural-related businesses within the state. The department maintains a farmers market that provides options for the efficient handling of farm products in the interest of farmers, consumers and the general public. It operates an agricultural and livestock theft bureau that enforces the laws of the state enacted for the purpose of preventing the theft of livestock and agricultural and aquacultural products. In addition, the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce operates a market development division that promotes and heightens the public's awareness of Mississippi s agriculture commodities and the farmers and ranchers who produce them. It also maintains a bureau of plant industry that is a regulatory and service division of the department. The department maintains a location in Jackson, Miss.
