The Metropolitan Center for Independent Living is a nonprofit organization that offers a variety of independent living services to individuals with disabilities. The center maintains a staff of more than 30 full-time and over 200 part-time employees. It provides information and referral, independent living skills training, peer counseling and support, recreation, equipment repair and housing modification services. The Metropolitan Center for Independent Living also provides transition programs for children and young adults with disabilities. In addition, the center offers training programs in the areas of nutrition and cooking, basic computer, budgeting and assertiveness. The Metropolitan Center for Independent Living has been operational since 1981.
