The McKnight Foundation is a private philanthropic organization founded in Minnesota in 1953 by William L. McKnight and his wife, Maude L. McKnight. The foundation initiated its formal grantmaking program in 1974 when Virginia McKnight Binger, only child of the founders, took over operations, along with the foundation s first chief executive. The foundation fulfills a dual role as a responsive grantmaker that supports grassroots action, and a strategic grantmaker that encourages system and policy reform. The foundation is unusual in being one of the country s largest foundations while being anchored in one state and still under the direction of a family board. The foundation is a member of the Minnesota Council on Foundations and subscribes to the Council's Principles for Minnesota Grantmakers.
