Founded in 1881, the Benson Fire Department protects a population of more than 5,190 people and serves an area of over 250 square miles. With a staff of nearly 30 volunteer members, the department offers a range of fire suppression, prevention and rescue services. It maintains a fleet of engines, ladders, tankers, rescue routers and all-terrain vehicles. The Benson Fire Department provides aid to other fire departments. In addition, the department offers firefighter training programs. It is governed by the city of Benson in Minnesota. The city government also administers garbage collection, public works, and parks and recreation departments. Its street department provides mosquito spraying, concrete work, airport runway and storm sewer ditch maintenance services.
