The Michigan Area Health Education Center (MI-AHEC) was established in 2010 to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in underserved areas of Michigan. Through recruitment and retention initiatives, as well as specialized clinical education programs, MI-AHEC aims to increase access to primary care for all Michigan residents, particularly those in areas with limited healthcare resources. It also strives to promote diversity in the health professions and encourage students and professionals to work in areas that lack sufficient primary care providers.
Funded in part by the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, MI-AHEC is part of the national AHEC program, which was created by Congress in 1971. The organization offers the AHEC Scholars curriculum, which complements students' academic learning and helps them become better healthcare professionals. MI-AHEC is committed to making a positive difference in education and healthcare by providing opportunities and support to disadvantaged students and addressing the healthcare needs of underserved communities.
