Founded in 1985, the East Grand Rapids Department of Public Safety comprises of police and fire departments. Located in East Grand Rapids, Mich., it has a staff of more than 30 sworn personnel, who are cross-trained as police officers, fire fighters and medical responders, as well as civilian support staff and paid-on-call fire fighters. The department offers child safety seat inspection, neighborhood watch, and fire safety and prevention programs. It additionally provides law enforcement, air boat rescue, cardiopulmonary resuscitation training and medical emergency services. The department also offers fire inspection and investigation services for residential and commercial properties. In addition, it provides gun registration, local criminal background checking, bicycle patrolling and bike licensing services. The East Grand Rapids Department of Public Safety is a part of the City of East Grand Rapids, which operates finance, city services, and parks and recreation departments.
