The City of Milan was first incorporated as a village in 1885 and recently celebrated its 125th birthday. Milan was settled in 1831 by John Marvin, who built a log cabin on what is now the West Main Street parking lot. Today, the city has a population of about 5,000. Milan is unique, in that its city limits cross the county line. About 60 percent of the land area and 75 percent of the residents live in Washtenaw County. The rest of the people live in Monroe County. The city is governed by a city council which features six members and a mayor.
