Brilliance Audio began its journey in 1984 by becoming the first to provide unabridged audio books for sale in bookstores. The tapes were marketed under the trade name Bookcassette. An innovator from the beginning, Brilliance patented a cassette multitrack recording technology that could produce unabridged audio books for roughly the cost of a hardcover book because it used half as many cassettes. Later imprints from the company include the Nova Audio Books line of abridged titles recorded in standard play and Brilliance Audio Unabridged, which remains the premier line of unabridged audiobooks on cassette. The company introduced books on compact disc in 2000. Brilliance Audio produces its own recordings, as well as productions for other audio book publishers. The company s Grand Haven, Mich., headquarters features digital recording studios and a staff of full-time and freelance directors, engineers, abridgers and voice talent.
