The VFW "Witch City" Post 1524 offers members a full-service bar, pool table, darts, TV and a variety of social activities. The pool league meets Thursdays at 7 pm and karaoke is held on Saturdays from 8pm to midnight. Membership meetings are held the third Monday of each month at 7pm. The Salem VFW also holds bowling, softball and golf tournaments to raise money for charity. In addition, it provides proper disposal of American flags that are used, worn, torn or soiled.
The VFW began in 1898 after the Spanish-American War. It is the oldest major veterans service organization in the U.S., with nearly three million members. Every Memorial Day, veterans can be seen selling the "Buddy Poppy" tag, which symbolizes soldiers who were wounded or killed in battle.
